Tour suggestion by Ann Mazzotti
We asked a number of local personalities to name the venues and events they will be visiting during the Kunsttage Basel. The third tour suggestion comes from gallerist Ann Mazzotti.
My tour of Kunsttage Basel starts on foot at the Kunsthalle Basel, where Toyin Ojih Odutola's impressive pastel works are currently on display. A short walk away, past the Kunstmuseum and the Cartoonmuseum, down the Mühleberg, I reach the Kunstmuseum Basel Gegenwart. The must-see exhibition "When We See Us" shows pan-African figurative painting by around 120 artists.
Still on foot, we walk along the Rhine towards Fähribödeli, climb the steps to the Minster cathedral and reach the Rheinsprung after a few minutes. The Gagosian Gallery shows precisely constructed objects by Donald Judd, which were created in Switzerland. From here, it's just a stone's throw to the St. Johanns-Rheinweg, where you can cross the Rhine on the Klingental ferry. During the crossing, we can relax for a moment and enjoy the marvellous view. Once we reach the Kleinbasel side, we head straight for the Atelierhaus Klingental. The Open Studios offer a great opportunity to discover young talents and talk to them. On the beautiful roof terrace of the Amber Bar, you can enjoy a drink with a view over Basel.
Refreshed, we hop on tram no. 6 in nearby Rheingasse in the direction of Riehen Grenze. At the end of our tour, we visit the unique Highlights from the Collection at the Fondation Beyeler. Here, timeless masterpieces are displayed in unusual juxtapositions. We round off the day in the Wiesengarten restaurant with seasonal produce and homemade pasta. If you still have energy left, you can take a long walk along the beautiful River Wiese back to the city.
The Kunsttage Basel weekend awaits – find splendid coffee at i favoriti. For refreshments, the Buvette Piccolo Cibo serves delicious pinsas and drinks. If you like spicy Thai food, Chanthaburi in Feldbergstrasse is the place for you.
And on a personal note: Gallery Ann Mazzotti will be hosting "Big beers and small talks" with artist Fabio Luks on Saturday, 31 August 2024 from 15:00. Everyone is welcome!
