Art & Architecture at Dreispitz. Tour with Selma Alihodžić

Basel is considered the architectural capital of Switzerland. It boasts a high concentration of contemporary buildings by world-famous architects, all nestled within a historically evolved city structure that spans centuries. Museum buildings form an essential and identity-defining part of Basel's urban culture. With the purchase of the private Amerbach Cabinet by the city and University of Basel in 1661, the oldest continuously existing museum collection of a civic or public community in the world was established. Since the 1980s, several collections have been housed in new buildings that are open to the public, enjoying a global reputation as pioneering museum architecture. All of this defines Basel and its region. We explore how architecture and art interact. From the perspective of artworks, what constitutes the ideal museum building? These and other topics are examined in two tours and presented at selected stations. We discuss how our understanding of museums has evolved over time and how artists envision museum architecture and spaces for their art.

Tour Dreispitz:

The tour lasts about 1.5 hours on foot and starts at the Infopoint at Kunstforum Baloise Park, Aeschengraben 33, Basel, and ends at Kunsthaus Baselland, Helsinki-Strasse 5, Münchenstein/Basel.

Selma Alihodžić works as an architect and author in Basel. She studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Stuttgart and specialised in curating at the Royal College of Art in London following her research work at the University of Tokyo. In collaboration with cultural institutions and artists, she realises cultural projects in Europe and Asia and has taught architectural theory at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Her work combines art and architecture with social engagement and has been presented at the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice and the 4th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, among others. In the This Is Basel Podcast, she reflects on Basel's cultural landscape in dialogue with her co-host and invited guests. Beyond disciplinary boundaries, her work relates the diversity of cultural expressions to one another.

Baloise is making the Baloise Park Art Forum available to young curators. Here they can share their newly acquired knowledge with a wider audience. In addition to the support of an experienced exhibition organiser and the given exhibition theme, they can make use of the entire infrastructure.
