PERMEABILITY. Kunsttage Plaza

The permeability of spaces is based on the simultaneous presence of openness and closedness, where a structure is both accessible and restricted at the same time. This ambivalence is what we aim to highlight in relation to spatial and social structures at the centre of this year’s Kunsttage activities at kHaus.

The building itself is designed as a corridor, facilitating travel between the Kleinbasel city district, the Kaserne area and the Rhine. At the heart of this transit is the idea of a plaza, a public square that in its traditional form is essentially an open structure. The concept of an "indoor plaza" therefore brings about the same ambivalence of openness and closedness. How can this condition be managed? Can permeability be intentionally created? The idea of a permeable membrane comes to mind – a structure that enables the exchange between inside and outside in both directions. This reflection on the nature of boundaries can be applied not only to spatial settings but also to social structures.

At the Kunsttage Plaza, this theme will be explored in various ways. Spatially, with an artistic intervention, and through participatory projects that encourage the public to actively engage in the permeability processes. In a thematic deep dive into social permeability in the art world, various workshops and the participatory "Ladder Bar" will be offered. Selected films will be shown to provoke thought about how permeability manifests in other areas of life and can serve as inspiration.

kHaus promotes exchange, synergies, interactions and encounters – within the building with our users, organisers and visitors, but also on the grounds, in the lively neighbourhood, with neighbours and interested parties in the city and beyond. We are committed to creating a space with multiple uses, where people can try things out and experiment, where we can constructively engage with political and social issues.

During Kunsttage, kHaus serves as the info point for the entire event and other offerings on site.
