Sichtbarkeit und Kunstschaffen. Rundgang durch die Kunsttage mit Stefanie Manthey

Bright, illuminated, and climate-controlled—these are characteristics of institutional spaces where the works of artists are displayed. Museums and galleries are two examples of this extensive typology, which generates visibility for artworks, artists, and contemporary themes such as corporeality, motherhood, racism, and ecology. Through installation views, these works are documented, multiplied, and shared. This convention has a long tradition and is constantly evolving.

During Kunsttage, we take the opportunity to look more closely and engage in conversations with people dedicated to creating this visibility: What assumptions about professional presentation, interests, preparatory work, research, discussions, decisions, and preparations precede this visibility? What remains in the dark, in the shadows, has been or is being left out? Which audience are they targeting? We will visit the Basel branch of Hauser & Wirth, where a thematic exhibition features works ranging from Louise Bourgeois to Carol Rama. At Contemporary Fine Arts, we will see a presentation of contemporary art curated by art critic and author Isabelle Graw. Following this, we will head to M54 to learn about the mission and self-appointed mandate of the Cristina Spoerri Foundation, before concluding with a discussion with the nomadic collective Courtney Jaeger on why they resist being tied to a specific location and what kind of visibility in spaces and online is essential to them.

Stefanie Manthey is an art mediator and author. Stefanie has contributed to exhibition and book projects during assistantships at Haus der Kunst, the Bavarian State Painting Collections, and the Kunstmuseum Basel. With a background in art history and art theory and a CAS in "Material and Technique," she is involved in mediation work for the Kunstmuseum Basel, Schaulager, Kunsthaus Zürich, and REHAB Basel. As an associate member of the SNF project "Activating Fluxus" and an assessor for the Swiss Study Foundation, she actively engages with current discourses and contributes to project-based initiatives.

Our new space at Luftgässlein 4 in Basel’s historic cultural district is housed in a former silk ribbon factory dating fromthe 1880s and comprises an exhibition space and a showroom on the ground floor. The gallery is run by Carlo Knöll who joined Hauser & Wirth as Senior Director in September 2023.
