VERSTRICKT, VERBORGEN, VERDRÄNGT

The traces of colonialism remain visible in Basel to this day. Basel served as a passageway for emigration to the colonies. Patrician families grew wealthy through trade in colonial goods and enslaved people. On this guided walk, you will not only learn about the entanglements of Basel’s colonial past, but also how they continue to shape the city today. Should Basel return cultural artefacts? To what extent are charity advertisements racist? And how is Switzerland’s self-image linked to colonialism? These are some of the questions that the Frauenstadtrundgang association explores from a historical perspective.

This tour requires no prior knowledge and is open to participants of all backgrounds.
