Tour suggestion by Peter Bläuer
We asked a number of local personalities to name the venues and events they will be visiting during the Kunsttage Basel. The seventh tour suggestion comes from Peter Bläuer. He co-founded the Liste Art Fair Basel in 1996 and was its director until 2018. This year, Peter Bläuer once again served as Artistic Director ad interim, until Nikola Dietrich takes over starting this September.
I have been involved with young art all my life. Now I'm looking into my own past on my proposed tour. I choose artists and institutions with whom I have a long history.
First, I go to Gisèle Linder (we've known each other forever) to congratulate her once again on her 40th gallery anniversary. Don't overlook Serge Hasenböhler's work on the veranda and the cheeky little picture by Urs Aeschbach.
Then to Stampa! Gilli and Diego have been at the forefront of contemporary art since the 1970s. Very important for me and for the city! They are showing Erik Steinbrecher (whom I have also known for over 40 years). A precise, fine work with subtle humour. Hence the title: sosoo.
Then to Contemporary Fine Arts. Always a pleasure to meet Nicole and Bruno. Their gallery was on the list for the first time in 1998 with an installation by Jonathan Meese. Here I'm looking forward to the thematic exhibition by Isabelle Graw.
Then it's off to Dominik Müller. He is the guest of the Berlin/Karlsruhe gallery Meyer Riegger. They exhibited at Liste for the first time in 1998. Here they are showing works by Jacqueline de Jong, who died this June at the age of 85.
Opposite in space25, Ivan Mitrovitc and Anselm Stalder will be presented. And in the FILIALE, Anselm Stalder once again. I have fond memories of exhibitions by Jean-Christophe Ammann at the Kunsthalle and Dieter Koepplin at the Kunstmuseum, which showed the then young Anselm. Now I am very excited to see new works (I have also known - and appreciated! - him for a very long time). If you read the text on the FILIALE page, you will see that it is by no means ‘light fare’ – a highly exciting, rich body of work that is worth devoting enough time to.
In the 1980s, the FILIALE was the only off-space (the word didn't even exist back then) and many young Swiss artists were shown there for the first time! The artist Eric Hattan, co-founder of the FILIALE (so I've known him for what feels like ‘100’ years), is shown at Nicolas Krupp with an installation in a building site. In 2001, Nicolas Krupp was the first Basel-based gallery that we presented at Liste.
And finally: I never skip the Kunsthalle and the Kunstmuseum and would like to mention them – because it is Jean-Christoph Amman at the Kunsthalle, Dieter Koepplin, and Franz Meyer at the Kunstmuseum who are ‘partly to blame’ for the fact that I ended up in art. Merci!
