Tour Suggestion by Lukas Loss

We asked leading figures from the art world which venues they plan to visit during Kunsttage Basel. This seventh and final tour recommendation in our series comes from Lukas Loss, Founder and Director of Interfinity Festival.
Kunsttage Basel offers a rich and exciting programme, reflecting the city's remarkable cultural diversity. It invites you to explore this concentrated artistic landscape and create your own connections between different works – essentially becoming a curator of your own experience.
I'll begin on a serious note: Hauser & Wirth presents works by Eugène Carrière. His pieces are dark, dreamlike, ephemeral – profoundly unsettling. They explore light (or rather, its absence): 'sculpter la lumière'.
Then, transitioning from light to sound, from 2D to 3D, I'll head to Schaulager for Steve McQueen's installation. Here, those fleeting, dreamlike moments become physical and auditory. As a musician, I'm drawn to immersive experiences – at our Interfinity Festival, we constantly seek formats engaging all senses. McQueen masters this brilliantly.
After immersion, I'll crave something lighter. Off to Cartoonmuseum for Alison Bechdel. Her humour isn't just laughter; it's sharp self-reflection. With delicate irony, this US artist examines trends and movements. In today's world, her ability to approach weighty topics with levity feels vital. Her work asks the right questions, letting us drop our masks unapologetically.
In the afternoon, Galerie von Bartha promises extraordinary art in the best sense. Their trio of openings – Erin Shirreff, Andrew Bick, Aurélie Nemours and Josef Albers – will create fascinating visual dialogues. The vibrant patterns and colours will refresh my senses after Schaulager's sonic experience, letting me revisit my Carrière impressions anew. I'm particularly eager to see how John Wood & Paul Harrison's installations, with their unique wit, might conclude this tour segment.
For my grand finale, I'll visit ensemble5's exhibition on circular economy at Franck Areal, paired with Michael Schindhelm's presentation. This kickstarts 'After the Deluge', our collaboratively curated exhibition for October's Interfinity Festival at Franck Areal.
