Kunsttage Expedition by Raphael Wyniger

We asked leading figures from the art world which venues they plan to visit during Kunsttage Basel. This fout tour recommendation in our series comes from Raphael Wyniger.

For this wonderful occasion, I would recommend starting the tour at 10.30 at the Teufelhof Bar. For me – and not just from a professional point of view – this is a fitting starting point, as the Teufelhof is a place where art, theatre and hospitality do not simply coexist, but come together in everyday life. After an espresso, it’s just a few steps further to the Carzaniga Gallery. Ihre gute Auseinandersetzung mit Schweizer Kunst und ihre Verbundenheit mit Basel machen sie zum perfekten Auftakt.

From there, the route takes you to the Kunstmuseum Basel. For me, it’s an integral part of this tour – not simply a must-see stop, but an important point of reference. Hardly any other place demonstrates so clearly how naturally Basel brings together historical masterpieces and contemporary art.

After that, it’s back to the Old Town to BOLO. ‘Yolo & Bolo with Artists’ Recipes’ combines art, cooking and hospitality. Recipes by artists are not just displayed, but prepared and shared. I like that because art here isn’t kept at a distance; instead, it can be experienced directly through taste, interaction and sharing a meal. I admit there’s probably a touch of professional bias involved too.

The tour then crosses the Mittlere Brücke into Kleinbasel to the DOCK. ‘Territórios Reimaginados: Reclaim Regional’ explores issues of belonging, migration and colonial structures.

Finally, I’d recommend the open studios at the Atelierhaus Klingental. There, you’ll encounter not only finished works, but also the people, spaces and processes behind them. Yes, I think that’s how I’d go about it. From my perspective, it offers a little insight into what I, too, appreciate so much about Basel: a sense of community and cosmopolitanism, major institutions and independent spaces, tradition and friction, enjoyment and serious engagement.

And finally, I took the liberty of adding the following comment: On Saturday and Sunday, two official tours organised as part of the Art Days will also stop off at the Teufelhof, focusing on the art rooms and the architecture of the SET Hotel.
